There are various methods for connecting rebars, one of which is the lap splice connection. This method is an old technique for connecting reinforcement bars in concrete structures, which is created by placing two rebars parallel to each other with an overlap length. It is sometimes mistakenly considered an economical method.

In this method, force transfer is achieved through the bond between concrete and reinforcement. The force from one rebar is first transferred to the concrete and then from the concrete to the adjacent rebar. In general, the bond between concrete and reinforcement depends significantly on the ribs on the rebar surface (transverse ribs). Research findings, design considerations in concrete structures, new materials, and other developments in the construction industry require a more effective alternative to lap splice connections.

From a construction and economic perspective, lap splice connections are suitable for small-diameter rebars, low-strength steel and concrete, and buildings with a limited number of floors. This article discusses the disadvantages of lap splice connections, compares them with mechanical splices, and also reviews the advantages of rebar couplers.

Problems and Disadvantages of Lap Splice Connections

For many years, many structural engineers, architects, and specialists have recognized that the lap splice method, despite having limited advantages, has numerous disadvantages. Lap splice connections perform poorly in transferring tensile forces.

A steel rebar in a concrete structure should only be responsible for transferring tensile and compressive forces. As shown in the figure, force transfer occurs along the axis of the reinforcement. In the lap splice method, the force transfer mechanism creates additional stresses in the concrete. These forces act in a direction that tends to separate the rebars from each other; therefore, the concrete cover must provide sufficient and adequate strength to resist these forces.

For this reason, longer lap splice lengths must be considered in structural design for large-diameter rebars.

دياگرام توزيع نيروهای وارده به بتن از آرماتورها در اتصال اورلپ

Proper Design of Lap Splice Connections

For the proper design of this connection, the requirements specified in ACI 12.2 must be considered as follows:

Type of steel: The higher the yield strength of the reinforcement steel, the greater the required lap splice length will be.

Surface condition of reinforcement: Rebars with epoxy coating require a lap splice length 50% greater than uncoated rebars.

Rebar size: Larger diameter rebars require a greater lap splice length.

Concrete grade: Lower-strength concrete requires a longer lap splice length.

Location of the connection within the structure: The performance of a lap splice connection depends on the position of the reinforcement, the location of the lap splice along the rebar, the spacing between rebars, and the distance from the edges of the concrete member.

Design load: The required lap splice length for tensile reinforcement is significantly greater than that required for compression reinforcement. Mechanical splices connect rebars end-to-end, providing many of the advantages of a continuous reinforcement bar. This method is considered one of the best methods for rebar connection.

Years ago, arc welding was the only method available to make two rebar pieces act as a single unit. However, today, numerous mechanical splice systems are available that can provide a precise and reliable connection easily and quickly.

These images clearly show that one of the advantages of rebar couplers is the reduction of reinforcement congestion and the ability to achieve proper concrete placement. In addition, a mechanical splice is much stronger and more robust than a lap splice connection, as according to ACI and the Iranian Concrete Code (ABA), the required strength level for a mechanical splice must be considered at least 25% higher than the design strength of the connection.

Mechanical splices demonstrate greater capacity and strength during the force transfer process. Their exceptional resistance against cyclic loads, as well as maintaining structural integrity against natural disasters such as earthquakes and man-made events such as blast-induced vibrations, are among the advantages of rebar couplers.

From a structural perspective, the most important advantage of using mechanical splices is ensuring force transfer within the reinforcement network without dependence on the condition and quality of concrete. Furthermore, mechanical splices reduce reinforcement congestion by eliminating lap splices.

Lap splice connections double the steel-to-concrete ratio and also create numerous difficulties during reinforcement placement and concrete pouring. Eliminating lap splices also provides more available space for post-tensioning operations.

From a design perspective, mechanical splices can be used as a solution to reduce the reinforcement-to-concrete ratio and allow the use of large-diameter rebars in smaller columns. As a result, reducing column dimensions increases the usable and effective floor area, which is considered a significant advantage.

Today, various types of mechanical splices are available in different shapes and dimensions according to user requirements in global markets as well as in the domestic market.

It should be noted that one of the most important advantages of rebar couplers is the ability to use them at any location within a concrete structure. This feature completely eliminates the limitations of lap splice connections by replacing them with mechanical splices. This unique capability not only provides better design flexibility for the optimal use of materials but also offers economic benefits for each project.

Sahand Mechanical Splices, as a manufacturer of various types of mechanical splices, is ready to enter into contracts for major national projects.
